What is Agarwood?
Agarwood, also known as oud, gaharu, or aloeswood, is a highly valuable and fragrant resinous wood derived from trees of the Aquilaria and Gyrinops species. It forms when the tree becomes infected with a specific mold (Phialophora parasitica), prompting it to produce a dark, aromatic resin as a defense mechanism. This resin-infused wood is what makes agarwood so rare and highly prized.
Formation of Agarwood
Natural Process: When an Aquilaria tree is injured or infected, it responds by producing resin to protect itself.
Resin Development: Over time, the resin saturates the wood, turning it dark and fragrant.
Harvesting: The infected resinous wood is extracted and processed for various uses.
